A Housing Future In Which the Tree of Life Might Flourish

It will be a high priority for my administration to ensure housing security for all. As we all work and earn less, we’ll be exploring all possible ways to meet everyone’s housing needs. Over time, contracting population will reduce the demand/supply imbalance. Eventually, there will be an oversupply and our challenge will be to put all the overbuilding we did during our growth binge to good use.

How we’ll support and achieve housing security:

  • We’ll support programs to repurpose vacant office and retail space into residential
  • We’ll encourage people with large houses to sublet or otherwise house more people, or to move into a smaller house so their large house can serve a larger family
  • We’ll implement disincentives to discourage ownership of multiple homes for one family’s use (“vacation homes,” “second homes,” etc.) Some individuals and families own as many as five houses, with four always sitting empty. We’ll find ways to discourage this.
  • We’ll find ways to end or discourage speculative housing investment
  • We’ll support and launch programs that provide home ownership in exchange for the labor to build
  • We’ll support and launch programs to train and enable local DIY natural building of energy-efficient homes with local material
